Add a writing rule
The Writer follows your rules in every draft and proposed edit. Where a rule disagrees with the Approach, the rule wins. Anyone on your team can add, edit, or delete a rule.
Add a rule
Open the rules
Go to Product › Writing.
Add it
In Add a rule, enter the rule as one plain sentence, such as “Call it a song, not a track.” Choose where it holds, then select Add.
- Every article: the default. The Writer follows the rule in every article.
- One article: select Every article, then choose the article. The Writer follows the rule in that article only.

A rule changes no article on its own. The Writer reads the rules each time it drafts an article or proposes an edit.
Save a rule when you reject an edit
When you reject a proposed edit, Docmunk asks why. Your answer can become a rule for next time. See Review proposed edits.
On the proposed edit, select Reject.
In Why?, enter the reason as a rule. Choose where it holds, then select Save rule.
- Every article: the default. The Writer follows the rule in every article.
- This article: the Writer follows the rule only in the article of this edit.
Docmunk rejects the edit when you select Save rule. To reject it with no rule, select Skip instead.
Rules you type and rules from a rejected edit
Both kinds sit in one list on Product › Writing, and the Writer follows them the same way. Each rule shows:
- Where it holds: “Every article”, or the title of its one article.
- Where it came from: the name of the person who typed it, “From a No” for a reason given on a rejected edit, or “From the chat”.
When the same rule holds in more than one article, “On 2 articles” shows with it. Select Use for every article to make it one rule for every article, or Dismiss.
Edit, move, or delete a rule
On Product › Writing, select More (⋯) on the rule, then choose:
- Edit: change the words in Rule, then select Save.
- Only one article…: hold a rule for every article in one article only. Choose the article.
- Move to another article…: hold a one-article rule in a different article.
- Use for every article: hold a one-article rule in every article.
- Delete: take the rule out. “Rule removed” shows with Undo, which brings it back.
